Swimming with the Sharks

My first encounter of General Mfazi was at the Eastern Cape Provincial Office in 2008. I was a young and highly motivated member of Crime Intelligence eager to be recognised by those in positions of authority. Much can be said about our many encounters including our two years together working side by side travelling the Eastern Cape Province. From the man much was learnt but most of all, he taught me the importance of mastering my many skills and excelling at my work. In his many speeches of encouragement he would advise me to never doubt myself and to always ‘swim with the sharks’. ‘Sande, i want you to swim with the sharks’ – Pitso would say. This was his analogy of debating and challenging even the Generals of the organisation but the only precondition he placed before me was that of excellence and high competence at my work. Rest in Peace Nozulu.

I knew Sindile Mfazi from far as the late 1970s. By then I was a teacher at Philemon Ngcelwane High School in Mdantsane. Sindile’s name featured in many political circles especially underground activists. We worked and communicated in some serious underground issues. It was not surprising to later hear that he has left the country. When he came back after 1991 I was amongst the first people he contacted. We worked closely after 1994 when I was working in the Office of Premier Mhlaba. That time Nanyi was the Head of the VIP in the Eastern Cape Province. Premier Mhlaba described Pitso as ‘the little giant with a big heart’. He was uncompromising when it comes to the protection of the Members of the Executive Council. I am going to miss his calls — ‘good morning Mr Bungane’... ‘hayindiryt Bra Mantsiki’. Hamba Nozulu, hamba Mpafane, may your soul rest in eternal peace and rise in Glory. Umkhuluwa wakho from another mother.

Water is soft and yet powerful enough to penetrate even mountains. This by far is the best analogy that best describes the kind of a leader that General was. With his love and sense of compassion the great man still became the finest leader I’ve ever known. The popular idea would be associating leadership with aggressiveness and a lack of compassion and yet I was privileged enough to have known and be led by General Mfazi, a man who has love as the base of how he leads. General Mfazi accepted me as his own Son and through his love I grew to understand the importance and the power of love and compassion. I’m broken in half and my heart is forever bleeding from this loss, however General left me well equipped to continue with his teachings. At the end of the day, a man is but his way of doing things and everything else is only a moment. Lala Nozulu, Lala Thukela. Until we meet again…

A Gentleman — By Tamara

I knew Pitso through my husband Sande and if there is anything I remember him for, it is how he always pushed my husband to be the best gentleman towards me. He used to reprimand my husband for not opening the door for me or letting me in first as we entered his Vincent residency. Our last conversation was two weeks before his passing and he was bubbly and joyous over the phone. It was like he was saying his goodbyes. Thank you for the wonderful memories and genuine fatherly love.

Pitso – A Man of Integrity and Discipline

Pitso, a man of integrity and discipline. One of the best military training instructors, Sindile ‘Pitso’ Mfazi, under whom I was trained at the Umkhônto we Sizwe Cassius Maake training base in Tanzania. Sad to read that he was assassinated because he uncovered major corruption within SAPS.

May-Day, General

General Mfazi was the kind of leader who made you believe in the institution. He treated every officer with dignity, regardless of rank. We know what he was investigating. We know why this happened. His family deserves justice. May-Day, General.

The Boy from Mdantsane

We remember Pitso. We watched him grow from a boy in Mdantsane into a General who never forgot where he came from. What they did to him is unforgivable. The R1.6 billion thieves will face justice. #MayDayCallForGeneralMfazi

Demand the Independent Inquest

The forensic evidence is clear. Liquid casting resin does not end up in a human body by accident. General Mfazi was assassinated for doing his job — investigating R1.6 billion in PPE corruption. We demand an independent inquest immediately.

The Enemy Was Always Within

Comrade Pitso survived apartheid, the Security Branch, exile in Angola — only to be poisoned from within. The enemy was always within. We owe it to him to finish what he started. The PPE fraudsters must be brought to account.

To Malindi, to Gugulethu and Lutho — South Africa stands with your family. The truth is coming out. Hold strong. We will not rest until the person who ordered your father’s assassination faces justice.
